The exhilarating sights and sounds of high powered competition cars will again thrill the area's rally enthusiasts with the news that the Pirelli International Rally, Cumbria's biggest sporting event, will again be the second round of the prestigious MSA British Rally Championship, bringing a host of top teams and drivers to Carlisle.
The rally, organised by Cumberland Sporting Car Club, has been a round of the series since it's inception, underlining it's credentials as one of the country's top motor sport events, and will feature two days of high speed action over testing forest tracks in the North of Cumbria and in the giant Kielder Forest complex, an area which gained world wide fame when it hosted the famous Lombard RAC International Rally in the 1960's and 70's. This year's route will feature some 115 competitive miles and will include an extra stage.
The Pirelli International Rally and its subsidiary events will bring up to 180 competing crews to Carlisle where the rally base will be situated at Carlisle Racecourse. The move, in 2009, to base the rally at the racecourse proved to be an outstanding success with the venue boasting a host of facilities such as restaurants, fast food outlets, refreshment and toilet facilities, there is even a cash dispenser, which really enhanced the event and went down very well with the competitors and the hard working service crews.
